Your ANTSHE Board of Directors is dedicated to the success of our organization and the success of our members, both professional and academic. Each Board of Directors demonstrate their commitment to nontraditional students through their many works in academia, and have been a non-traditional learner themselves and can relate personally to the challenges that nontraditional students face when attending college. Board of Directors are elected for a term of two years.


 Dr. R. Lee Viar IV, President

Dr. R. Lee Viar IV, President of  ANTSHE, is a graduate of Capella University and earned his Ph.D. in Post-Secondary Adult Education and Training. He is a Certified Post-Secondary Instructor and is always pursuing other educational opportunities. He traveled to Harvard University as part of the  Class of 2013 earning a Post- Doctorate in Management Development, successfully completed the Fellowship Program in Higher Education Management at Vanderbilt University in 2014, completed a Post-Doctorate in the Challenges of Leadership in Teams Program at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the summer of 2015, studied at the University of Oklahoma and earned over 30 credit hours towards a DBA in Organizational Behavior. He is currently pursuing a second Masters Degree, this one in American History at Norwich University. He is a Maryland native, achieved the Sigma Beta Delta Business Honors Designation Honors and graduated from Frostburg State University. He holds an MBA in Marketing and Management. He is a Professor-Senior Lead Business Faculty in the School of  Management and Business teaching at the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Doctoral levels.

Dr. Viar is an innovative teacher and published author, writing the book, "The Nontraditional Learner's Guide to Success" as well as contributing to several other academic journals, publications, and interviewed on the topics of higher education and the nontraditional learner by numerous news outlets including U.S. News and World Report, Inside HigherEd, USA Today,, Mountaineer News Service, The Herald Mail, and the Wall Street Journal. He has a deep passion and devotion to education and being a lifelong learner. He has been a college professor for over 18 years both online and on campus. In addition, he has over 20 years of professional marketing and business experience in the areas of banking and marketing management. When Dr. Viar is not in the classroom or volunteering for ANTSHE, he enjoys spending time with his wife Lori and their six children, six grandchildren, and a very precocious Tibetan Terrier. He also enjoys reading about United States History, being outdoors, writing, and enjoys watching classic movies. To learn more about Dr. Viar visit


 R. Todd Powell, Vice-President

R.Todd Powell, ANTSHE's Vice President, is an Assistant Director and part-time Instructor of Education at Kennesaw State University. His career includes  over 20 years of experience pertaining to academic success and personal  development of students at both two and four-year institutions. Todd is in his 7th  year in his role as Assistant Director at KSU. He manages the overall functions,  programming, and operations of Adult Learner Programs/Lifelong Learning  Center. Todd holds a Master of Arts degree in Education and has been recently  recognized by the Association for Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education  (ANTSHE) for his commitment and service to adult learners.

The program has been recognized for best practices in the 2008 Journal, Serving Adult Learners: A Handbook for Effective Practice. In 2010, ALP/LLC was recognized by ANTSHE in their campus survey measuring nontraditional student friendliness, where KSU earned the highest rating of all participating institutions nationally. Most recently, Mr. Powell's program was recognized by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission for Commuters and Adult Learners with the Outstanding Adult Learner Program Award at ACPA's 2013 National Convention.

 Dr. Esther S. Powell, Academic Affairs Officer

 Dr. Esther S. Powell , a retired Assistant Dean for Support and  Engagement Services, University College and Lifelong Learning, Winston-Salem State University. Dr. Powell has nearly thirty years in higher  education. Her  experience in higher education has included Business and  Financial Affairs,  Student Affairs, Advancement and University Relations and  Academic Affairs  (where she has worked and continues to work with  undergraduate, graduate, and  nontraditional adult students), which makes  her a great fit as Academic Affairs  Officer at ANTSHE.

 Dr. Powell earned her undergraduate degree in business management from  Shaw  University, a master’s degree in adult education from North Carolina A&T State University and her doctorate degree in higher education leadership from Northcentral University.

She is a past president of the North Carolina Adult Education Association (NCAEA). She is the North Carolina State Representative for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Association of Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) and Dr. Powell is President of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society.

 Dr. John Bannister, Scholarship Officer

 Dr. John Bannister has over a decade working with adult learners, both in  campus based and online environment. He is a professor and advisor, and  also trains faculty in designing their courses for adult learners. He  completed his undergraduate degree as a nontraditional student and  continually advocates for this student demographic in various settings. John  holds a Ph.D. in Adult Education Leadership, a M.B.A. and Graduate  Certificates in Marketing and Educational Technology. He is currently the  Instructional Designer for Metropolitan College, at Johnson C. Smith University.


 Lori A. Viar, Communications Officer

 Lori Viar, ANTSHE's Communications Officer, has a great passion for   helping  others to succeed. She is a content manager and technical writer with over 20 years experience working in administration in the financial and higher education industries. She has  developed an easy-talking writer style and a detail-oriented nature. Her areas  of  expertise include: copywriting editing (print and web), web content writing and design, social media marketing, project planning, and user experience improvements, web design, technical  online content, memorandums, employee manuals, newsletters,  and policy  manuals. Lori graduated from Colorado Technical University Summa Cum Laude  with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources  Management while earning Sigma Beta Delta Business Honors. She plans to further her career in content management and in copywriter editing, and in the near future will  be embarking on her educational journey again to fulfill  her goal of attaining a graduate degree in technical communication.

As a nontraditional learner, Lori had to overcome many obstacles to achieve her educational goals. While attending college, she was changing career fields and raising six children, which was by far her greatest challenge and yet the most rewarding. She considers herself a lifelong learner who is dedicated to helping other nontraditional learners succeed in their education.  


 Dr. Bryan Forsyth, Veterans Officer

Dr. Bryan Forsyth is a Lead Business Faculty in the College of Business and Management. He has worked in a variety of industries including government, food, electronics,  telecommunications, transportation, manufacturing, distribution and education. Bryan’s principal areas of expertise include knowledge and  learning management, organizational and employee development, organizational systems interventions and leadership development. Bryan  has been a professional in the training and development/education arena  for approximately 30 years.

 Additionally, Bryan is currently teaching business, management and other social science courses for undergraduate, MBA as well as Doctoral studies. Bryan received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Vocational Education from Southern Illinois University, majoring in Education, Training and Development. A Master of Arts degree from Ottawa University specializing in Human Resources and Organizational Change Management where he graduated at the top of his class. And lastly, he has completed his doctoral studies at Walden University for a degree in Applied Management and Decision Sciences emphasizing Knowledge and Learning Management where he also graduated at the top of his class. Bryan focused much of his energy during his doctoral program in trying to understand how human capital assets can be maximized to gain recognizable value. Bryan spent 15 years with the military (Air Force) and attained his Associates and his Bachelor’s degrees while serving on Active Duty.

Dr. Forsyth, from his own military experiences and years in uniform brings not only a wealth of knowledge of the challenges of our men and women in uniform in their personal lives, but also their academic journey well. His drive and passion for both education and our nation's veterans makes him a great asset to ANTSHE as the Veterans Officer and we are proud to have him on our Board of Directors.

Dr. John Sheuring, Director of Research & Development

Dr. John D. Sheuring is a full-time Instructor at Wake Technical Community College. He currently is the Lead Instructor for the Information Technology Cybersecurity Program. He is also an instructor at North Wake College and Career School which is a combined High School and Community College that provides high school students the opportunity to receive their high school diploma and a two year Associate of Arts degree in IT. He has worked in a variety of businesses including owner of a limousine company service shop, insurance appraisal, accident investigator for the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, and Cryptography. His specialty is Cybersecurity in the IT industry. His focus is to help students in the Cybersecurity field to understand the importance of security in all aspects of their lives. To build on their knowledge to become successful Security Specialist for business, companies and organizations that are in need of unique individuals that can help in the prevention of attacks with intrusion detection prevention systems, certified ethical hacking and ethical administration for IT Systems.

John received his Bachelors of Science in Information Technology and Security and Criminal Justice. A Master of Science in Management and Information Technology Management and his Doctorate in Management in Homeland Security. John focuses his time on new security practices in the cybersecurity field. He has written one book, Forever Forward: Recounting of my Life that became Teachable Moments for Myself. He is working on a second book; A New Spectrum: Generational Neurotypical Autistic Spectrum and a third book on Cybersecurity for the Everyday Person. He finds additional time to write on Nontraditional Students and the challenges that face these students which are becoming a majority of the student population in community colleges. Lastly, John has spent 22 ½ years in the US Navy as a Cryptologist, serves as the Faculty Advisor for the Student Veterans Association for Wake Tech and is President of the Wake Forest Middle School Booster Club.
