Faculty: Facilitators of Social Cohesion and Degree Completion in Adult Learners

Saturday, March 17 | 8:15 AM - 9:05 AM |

Session Type: General

Delivery Format: Interactive lecture

The adult learner brings a unique set of circumstances to the academic environment. In addition to finding balance in managing multiple roles, the adult learner is confronted with academic practices that he/she may not have [adapted] skills for success. One common stressor for adult students is a projected fear of inability to recall prior school knowledge and skills, as well as adapt to changes in instruction delivery and course requirements. Research suggests that high levels of satisfaction with academic factors and campus support are positively correlated with higher degree completion rates among adult students. Academic professionals who interact with these learners must be willing to acknowledge adult students’ unique needs and work collaboratively to build a socially cohesive atmosphere. This presentation will discuss ways that faculty in the adult program can provide academic and support services that nurture social cohesion among adult students and thus, increase academic satisfaction and degree completion rates.

Outcomes: 1. understand the relationship between support, cohesion, and degree completion 2. learn which academic and support services are most helpful 3. explore ways to develop cohesion
